Your DB board is where the municipal supply enters your property and gets split into circuits. It's also where a surprising amount of electrical trouble starts. We're regularly called out to boards that are older than the people living in the houses they feed — ceramic fuses, no earth leakage, and breakers that have been replaced with whatever was in the bakkie that day.

Upgrades are becoming more common than new installations, and load is usually the reason. A house built in the 1970s was never designed for a heat pump, an induction stove, a borehole pump and a solar inverter. When the geyser and the kettle and the oven all land on the same circuit, the board starts talking to you — breakers that trip, terminals that run warm, and a faint smell of hot plastic. That's the board asking for an upgrade.

A proper DB board upgrade means new breakers sized to the circuits, an earth leakage unit protecting the sockets, surge protection if you're running electronics, and everything labelled so you know which switch kills which room. It takes a few hours and it's one of the best value jobs we do. What we never do is bypass a faulty breaker or bridge out an earth leakage unit to stop it tripping — that's how house fires start, and no COC will ever be issued over work like that.
