Fault finding is diagnosis, not guesswork. We carry insulation resistance testers, loop impedance meters and thermal imaging equipment, and we use them. A breaker that trips when it feels like it could be a damaged cable in the wall, a worn appliance, water in a junction box, or a nail through a wire put in by a picture hook eight years ago. Testing tells us which one before we start opening up ceilings.

The most common causes we find are the same ones over and over: rodents chewing on cable insulation in ceilings, water ingress into outside junction boxes, overloaded circuits that were never designed for modern loads, and old cable that has simply reached the end of its life. In a lot of cases the fault is in one circuit and the fix is contained — but occasionally the testing shows the whole installation needs attention, and we'll tell you that too.

We charge a call-out and labour for fault finding like any other job, but we don't pad the bill. If we find the fault in twenty minutes, you pay for twenty minutes. And on maintenance contracts, fault-finding visits are included in the monthly fee — which is why so many of our commercial clients don't wait for a breakdown before calling us.
